Climate Controlled Storage
An article provided by Simply Self Storage

As more and more people around the country begin using self storage facilities to store their belongings, many are asking whether or not climate control storage is required. People inherently worry about what their belongings will look like or what condition they will be in when they are eventually removed from storage. Although most household items do not require climate control storage, there are many items that do require this type of self storage so people are increasingly using climate control storage services that are being offered by self storage facilities. This article will review some of the problems that can develop if you decide not to properly store your items in a high quality climate control facility. Although it is not meant to alarm you, it is my hope that this article raises the awareness of proper storage procedures.

Climate can cause all kinds of problems for certain items that have been placed in storage. Since climate varies from one part of the country to the other, this must be taken into account when deciding what you wish to place into self storage. Overly dry conditions can cause just as many problems as excessively humid or damp conditions. Due to these types of oppressive environments, biological contaminants such as mold, mildew, and dust mites can infiltrate stored items and damage or even flat out destroy certain items.

Climate control storage will limit or flat out prevent these types problems. Not only will climate control storage help with these types of issues, it will also prevent other issues such as rot, musty odors, and wood rot and certain health relates issues such as asthma since it will prevent mold and mildew from forming of stored belongings. Spending the extra money on a climate control storage unit is almost always worth the extra expense in the long run since it does a very god job of preserving most types of belongings.

There are certain types of belongings that will benefit from climate control storage more than others. For example, items such as art, paper, and paintings will almost always begin to deteriorate quickly as a result of high humidity environments. Pages will curl and the ink will almost certainly bleed through to other pages. Paintings are particularly susceptible to humidity and will eventually develop mold and mildew, completely ruining these types of items. Clothing is another type of item that will not do well when stored in a damp or excessively humid location. Virtually all types of fabric or cloth material will eventually become covered in mold and mildew unless it is stored in a warm and dry climate control storage facility. This is yet another reason to spend the extra money on a climate control storage unit when considering a self storage solution.

Electronic and computer components and devices are probably the most sensitive to both moisture and excessively dry conditions. It is imperative that you store these types of equipment in a climate control storage environment. Otherwise, they will be damaged beyond repair in most cases. Once moisture seeps into an electronic component, there isn’t anything that can be done to repair it. Climate control storage prevents this from happening.

Wooden furniture and upholstered items are particularly susceptible to both overly dry conditions and excessively humid environments. Antiques in particular can sustain major damage if not stored in a proper climate control storage facility. Mold and mildew will stain and ruin upholstered and wooden furniture. It can also cause major health problems for many people with allergies and illnesses such as asthma. In addition to staining, highly humid storage facilities will almost always cause wooden items to rot sooner rather than later.

As you can see, there are just so many things that can go wrong if you opt to store your belongings in a self storage facility that does not offer climate control storage. Think about all of the things that can go wrong – mold, mildew, wood rot, health issues, etc. The list of issues goes on and on. Why anyone would believe it makes sense to store items in a non-climate control storage facility is beyond me. The next time you need to utilize such a facility, be sure to shop around. Ask questions and do some comparison shopping to ensure you are choosing the right climate control storage provider.

I hope you have enjoyed this article and that you feel the advice that I’ve provided has been at least a little bit helpful to you. If you need more information on climate control storage facilities, be sure to check your local yellow pages.
