Why You Need Climate Control Self Storage
An article provided by Simply Self Storage

For many uses, standard self storage or mini storage units work well. Some people, however, are in particular areas of the county or have specific needs that cannot be met without climate control storage.

These storage units moderate the interior temperature and humidity of a unit to be safe and comfortable.

High Temperatures

One reason you may want a climate control storage unit is that temperatures in your area rise particularly high. The temperature inside a small storage unit can be more than 20 degrees higher than the outdoor temperature, so your personal belongings inside the unit are exposed to even more temperature extremes than you feel outside.

Many items that are commonly stored in self storage react badly to extremely high temperatures.

Low temperatures

Similarly, there are areas of the country where -20 or -30 degrees Fahrenheit is a common temperature for outdoors at many points in the winter. Often, these temperatures stay around for several weeks at a time. This means any items in the self storage units at that time will be exposed to sub-freezing temperatures for extended periods.

Freezing can alter the properties of many items and make them more susceptible to breaking and cracking.

Humidity

Remember that, similar to an air conditioning unit in a home, climate control storage keeps humidity out of the air.

Humidity causes warping, tearing and breaking in many items, and completely destroys others. It can also provide great breeding grounds for mildew and mold. So only use a storage unit without climate control if you are certain the items you are storing are immune from damage caused by humidity.

Protection from the elements for you

One great thing about having a climate control storage unit is that when you go to put items into the mini storage, you are working in complete comfort. No sweating or freezing as you unload old home businesses items, musical instruments or paperwork.

If you need to retrieve items from the storage unit, a climate control hallway and surroundings will keep you free from storm and temperature extremes.

Items That Need Climate Control Storage

There are some items that you can put into a self storage unit and not worry about weather, temperature or humidity.

However, there are a number of items that should be in a space that is controlled for temperature and humidity, as well as offering a protection from the elements.

Consider leather goods. If fine leather furniture, leather shoes, handbags, jackets or other accessories are exposed to extremes in cold, they are very likely to crack and tear. Leather molds and mildews in humid conditions as well, so leather does not do well in a standard storage unit or mini storage.

Fine furniture will warp and crack in hot and humid temperature, causing real distress when you come to the self storage to retrieve your items.

Crystal and glassware responds poorly to extreme temperature changes, such as those subject to a standard, metal wall unit. While they are unaffected by humidity, the extreme temperature changes have been known to crack crystal and shatter fine glassware.

Clearly, photographs, negatives and slides should not be stored in a non-climate control storage unit. Photographic prints stick together in high humidity, and the colors are damaged by high heat. Similarly, photographic negatives are permanently damaged by humidity and heat, making them unusable.

Paper items such as books, business records and family files should also be put in a climate control self storage unit. Humidity can damage such paper items beyond any salvageable use.

Computers, digital storage devices and other moisture and heat sensitive electronic equipment needs a moderated temperature in order to preserve the important data stored on them. Electronic musical instruments have similar reactions to being left to the elements.

With humidity removed from the air and the ambient temperature kept between 55 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the climate control storage environment is safe for all electronics and electrical instruments.

Mattresses and fine clothing as well as many pharmaceuticals and retail products such as cosmetics and perfumes are damaged by the high temperatures and humidity in a standard self storage unit.

Musical instruments such as pianos, woodwinds and string instruments respond very badly to high humidity and high or low temperatures, as do pharmaceutical products and fine art such as oil paintings and sculpture.

While there are a number of items that are not dependent on moderated temperatures and humidity, there are many items for which climate control storage is the perfect solution.
