Normally, the storage rental company will include any applicable utilities like light and insurance into the monthly rental fee that is originally quoted to you. However, never assume that this is the case. Always ask what the rental price is including and look out for hidden or unexpected fees. If you are renting a climate controlled unit there might be an additional fee charged to your account if you request that your items be kept at a specific temperature. When the facility offers to help you transport your own belongings into your new unit look out for vehicle rental fees, labor, gas, mileage, and other unexpected fees.

Another price that might get added to your storage rental fee that is not common, but certainly exists, is the charge for accessing your unit before or after the official working hours. Generally it is not applicable, but you need to ensure whether it is included in the rental or not. You will usually need to ask if your storage rental facility boasts twenty four hour access or late hours. Many will offer these services and features free of charge to attract more clients but some companies have no problem charging customers for the privilege of accessing their own property.

Another cost that you will incur, which many new renters do not expect, is the deposit fee that you need to provide to the storage rental company in the beginning. Sometimes, these deposits are refundable and sometimes not. Read the fine print of your contract carefully regarding their deposit terms. Also, if the terms state that the deposit will only be returned if the unit has not been damaged check the storage unit you will be assigned before signing the contract.

If the unit is already damaged ask for a new one, if there are no other units available at that size, ask for a larger one for the price you were planning to pay. The storage facility will usually not make you pay for damaged goods. If worst comes to worst have them note the damage in detail and state that it was preexisting into the contract and make sure you get a copy of this information. This will help you get your deposit back if you choose to leave the storage facility.

The bottom line is that you need to properly understand entire issues and regulation related to storage rental as any hidden clause could give you a serious head ache in the future.
