The Ins and Outs of Self Storage
An article provided by Simply Self Storage

There are many reasons why more and more people are turning to self storage in order to keep and protect items that are very important to them. The reasons vary but most often it is because they are moving and need a place to keep things while they are packing. Also, their garages, basements, and attics could be full, thus facilitating the need to move some things to another location.

People who opt to use one of these mini storage facilities will most likely find that they will either need to provide their own lock and key or they will be provided with one but the person signing the contract with the facility will be the only authorized key holder. These facilities are usually behind a gated area where unauthorized people cannot gain access to the customer's belongings. Often times the people who operate these businesses live on the property offering additional security to patrons.

When investigating each facility, one will find that self storage can go by many different names:

  • mini-storage
  • public storage
  • storage units
  • mini-warehouse
  • storage shed
  • storage rental
  • long-term storage

As you can see there are a variety of terms associated with the ability to store a variety of items. Items that people tend to store in these facilities can range anywhere from personal or business furniture to pictures and paperwork.

Most people around the country have used these businesses at one point or another and there are many ways to determine which size of a storage unit you will need and what your budget will allow. Some of the most popular sizes are:

  • 10 x 5 - the size of a walk-in closet
  • 10 x 10 - the size of a small bedroom
  • 10 x 20 - the size of a one car garage
  • 20 x 20 - the size of a two-car garage

As anyone can see, there are a variety of sizes and units available for just about any storage needs that one would have. Just as the variety of the sizes is great, so are your payment options. You can choose weekly rates or monthly rates and some facilities even offer great discounts and sign-on bonuses such as first month free or first and last month free. The cost of the storage facilities are not highly expensive at all, however, if you are going to be using this service for several years you will want to do some price comparisons as even the small cost can really add up over time. Insurance is also available on your personal belongings but it is important to note that you will need to ask for this in advance because it is not included in your rental. It is important to check with the operator of the storage unit to see if he will need to purchase this additional insurance because some of the bad things that can happen may be covered under their insurance policy or maybe even your own homeowner's policy if you own your own home.

For an example, the insurance policy of the owner of the facility may cover your property in the event of a fire but you will need to investigate whether or not you should purchase additional insurance to cover theft, water damage, or any high winds such as from a hurricane or tornado. Most homeowner’s policies cover all the property that the homeowner owns regardless of where it happens to be situated at that particular time. You will still need to look into policy exclusions and adaptable to make sure that your items will be able to be replaced should the unthinkable happen. There are certain renter’s insurance policies that will do the same thing as homeowner’s policies but you will need to connect with your agent to be sure.

As one can see, storing your personal belongings in any facility whether it be short-term storage or long-term storage will need some investigation to be sure that you are keeping your belongings in a safe area. Finding the right as facility can be very easy because these businesses are popping up more and more every day. They also seem to be in every area of every city around the country.

Although storing your personal belongings is an easy process you will still want to do your homework before jumping in to this venture. Taking the aforementioned advice into consideration will afford you the opportunity to make the right decision while giving you peace of mind.
