Your Self Storage Guide Simply Self Storage

What is Self Storage
An article provided by Simply Self Storage

Self storage allows you to store items away from your home for a monthly or yearly storage rental fee. Business users might use self storage to store boxes of paperwork that it’s necessary to keep, but that just takes up room at the office or place of business that could be used for other things. Personal users might use self storage to help get some of the clutter out of their homes. But when that clutter is made up of things you want or need to keep and you just don’t have room, storing them away from your home is a good compromise. That’s where self storage can help.

Self storage differs from some other storage solutions in that you have complete control of your storage unit. Unlike some storage solutions where you pay a high fee and sign a contract that allows you limited access to your goods - usually in which the storage company is present each time you remove or add something to your storage unit - self storage allows you to avoid all of that.

No one has to move your things or see exactly what you put into storage. In fact, you’ll have to find your own way to bring your items to the storage unit, and to remove them later. You have access to your items any time the facility is open, and you can remove items and add items at will with no extra charges or invasion of your privacy. You’re also not locked into a long-term contract because most self storage lets you rent a storage unit for as little as a month.

There’s a wide variety of choice when it comes to the size of your self storage unit, too. Some mini storage units are small, barely the size of a small hallway closet. But you can also rent space large enough for boat storage, vehicle storage or even RV storage. The smaller the storage unit, the smaller the price tag. And in some cases, if you need large or long term storage, you can get discounts.

The flexibility offered by self storage also translates to more convenience when it’s time to put items into storage or take them out. It doesn’t cost anything to access your storage and you won’t pay extra, as you could with traditional storage if you add something new to your storage unit. You don’t have to wait for an appointment, either. As long as the facility is open you can access your self storage. You might have to sign in to show that you were there and accessed it, but that should be all you’re required to do.

If you have a large storage unit and remove enough items that you could use a smaller and less expensive unit, this is easily done. Likewise, if your self storage needs increase, you can move from a small unit to a larger one without hassle. You also won’t go to get into your self storage one day and find that it’s been moved by the storage company.

Because you must provide your own lock and you’ve paid for that particular storage unit, your items will stay in the same place. This practice of customers providing their own locks offers extra security. No previous customer who used that storage facility could have an extra key and be able to get to your things, because each person uses their own lock. Not even storage company employees or owners can get into your unit without you opening the lock first.

If you’re renting a self storage unit and no longer need it, most of the time you can let the company know, remove your items and receive a refund for the remaining time you’ve paid for. If you pay monthly, the company may not do this or they may only refund if less than half of the month is used, but if you’ve paid in advance for a longer amount of time you should get all your unused money back.

And though you get increased privacy, since no one at the storage facility needs to see what you put into storage or what you do with it once you’ve rented it and added your items, you can still opt to pay to have certain services performed at some facilities. Some offer paid help packing items and putting them into the storage unit, and may supply boxes, bubble wrap and other packing materials. Self storage really gives you dozens of options you wouldn’t have with traditional storage rental.
