Find the Storage Unit That Fits Your Needs
People find they need a self storage unit for a variety of reasons. Some of the more common reasons include temporary storage of household materials during a move, storing bulky sports equipment off season, and off season storage of an RV, boat or snowmobile.
There are a variety of different considerations to make in deciding on a self storage company. Some of the things to consider are 24 hour access to goods, security and monitoring, and climate control storage for electronics, antiques, art and papers.
Here are some types of self storage and terms to consider when choosing a storage unit.
Storage Unit
The term storage unit refers to any space that is rented out to store temporarily unneeded materials.
Typically a storage facility will have many different sizes of self storage units along with different levels of service. Some facilities have 24 hour security with patrols on site, others are unmonitored. Some facilities have the option of climate control storage, which makes storage a good option for antiques, fine furniture, and valuable business papers.
Storage units may be large or small. Some of the more common size configurations are 5’ x 5’ 5 x 10, and 10’ x 10’. There are some who aim for the larger units, such as the huge 12 x 34 units that can fit a small car inside them
Mini Storage
A mini storage facility is a term that is sometimes used to mean a specific type of self storage facility that specializes in smaller units. Often a mini storage facility will have units with standard 36” exterior doors, and open into smaller 5x5 or 5x10 spaces.
Other facilities are called mini storage because all of their units are indoors, and none are very large.
This kind of unit is in contrast to other self-storage facilities that may have a mix of smaller units with standard doors and larger units with garage-type doors to accommodate more items.
Although some facilities do make a distinction between “mini storage” and other storage, sometimes you will see the term mini storage used as part of the name for a standard self storage facility. The mini storage term isn’t strictly defined in the industry.
Urban Storage
The big city dweller has completely different needs for self storage facilities than those from the suburbs or rural areas.
In the city, rather than a single story rental facility spread out over several acres, you will typically find a self storage company that owns or leases a few floors in a large skyscraper or office building.
Rather than having a complimentary truck to haul goods, as is found with some suburban mini storage companies, urban facilities offer perks such as dollies or rolling carts to transport their belongings.
A popular amenity in an urban self-storage facility is a freight elevator to easily transport items up and down to and from the units.
Other amenities the urban storage customer likes are 24 hour security and easy pin pad or other keyless access to the storage unit and the materials. Vehicle storage is generally not an issue in the city, nor can vehicles be accommodated.
Vehicle Storage
Many suburban and rural storage facilities do allow vehicles. RV storage is particularly popular, as many who travel in the RV in the summer like to park it for the winter.
Self storage facilities that accommodate vehicle storage will either offer outdoor or indoor vehicle storage facilities. Outdoor facilities often offer a fenced area that is large enough for RV storage or boat storage. If you store your vehicle in one of these open lots, you’ll probably want a cover over it.
Inside vehicle storage keeps the vehicles protected from the elements and often keep them locked and protected from unauthorized entry.
Long Term Storage
You may need long term storage for several reasons. One of the most common reasons for long term storage is that a family has to move and needs a place for their belongings while they fix items on their new home, or while they try to find a home.
Long term storage works at any self storage, but some solutions work particularly well for long-term storage.
Another possibility is a mobile container for long term storage. The company delivers a large, empty container to the home, and you’re responsible for filling the container with the belongings you want stored. The company then picks up the mobile container and puts it away in storage for as long as it is needed.
This kind of self storage has very little access for the property owner.
