Before you begin storing items for your grandchildren it is important that you keep a few things in mind.

Paying for years in advance is often easier than worrying about monthly fees. Plus, storing items for grandchildren and paying monthly fees can lead to problems if you pass away or become indisposed and are unable to pay for storage. If storage fees are not paid promptly the items are put up for auction and your legacy for your children can be lost in a stroke.

When you have chosen a storage facility and decided how you will pay for your storage fees you must carefully read over the contract. Storage facilities sometimes have tricky contracts that are designed to offer the company the maximum amount of protection available. Find out what will happen to your belongings should you pass away and your grandchildren are not able to produce a key or other information necessary to access the storage facility. Some companies include rights of survivorship or even joint ownership into the contracts. When this happens you will be able to designate your grandchildren as joint owners or heirs to the belongings in the storage facility making it easy for them to gain access at the appropriate time.

Once you have made arrangements for payment and found an agreeable contract you must get the items you plan to leave to your grandchildren and start preparing them for storage. This preparation should be made with long term goals in mind. Avoid using boxes or any material that will deteriorate overtime. Instead invest in sturdy, plastic, materials that will stay in good shape over the years with little or no obvious deterioration. Pack your items into these containers securely and cover them with plastic while they are in the container. Leave no room for movement or shifting of items. Neatly label the containers, do not be to detailed but be detailed enough so that people unpacking the items will know whether or not they should expect to find clothing, books, or paperwork within the boxes.

When you have prepared your belongings for storage by packing them and you are ready to place your items into storage for your grandchildren then you must prepare your storage unit. It is important that you do everything in your power to make sure that no damage is done to your items. Clean the storage unit thoroughly by sweeping and vacuuming the floor, dusting the walls, and even cleaning the ceiling if possible. Place plastic or tarp on the floor before putting furniture down. If you are leaving furniture for your grandchildren always place it into storage first.

Make sure the furniture is clean and that the storage unit is carefully climate controlled to avoid deterioration of any items placed into storage. Failing to clean the furniture you plan to leave to your grandchildren before putting it into storage could lead to insects and rodents being attracted to the material. Once the furniture is clean cover it with tarp or any other sturdy, water tight, material and then start placing the plastic containers on top of the furniture whenever possible. Leave plenty of space between the furniture and containers and the walls.

After all of your items are carefully stored you can rest and relax. You can now be sure that your items will be kept perfectly safe for your grandchildren when they are ready to own and appreciate your legacy.
