Storage Units Industry
In recent years, we have seen the rise in facilities for storage units erected in major cities, especially in the United States and United Kingdom, among other industrialized countries. Residential and commercial properties had been improved for these facilities to cater to a growing number of customers who need space to keep their valued possessions under utmost care and security. In the United States alone, this industry boasts of billions of dollars in revenues every year.
Alternatively, this business is also called self storage or mini storage, which rents out units to customers depending on their need. Most common storage units that are in demand among customer are those that are as big as a regular closet. For those who need more space, they can also rent out units as big as a child’s room or a garage that can house one or two cars. Now that you get a feel that these can be as big as any room you may have, don’t think that you’re allowed to sleep or stay in the rented units. And even if you’ve thought about it, you may not be as willing to sleep in these units once you realize that there aren’t any windows. It looks much like a bigger version of a security cabinet you may have used when staying in a hotel or banks to keep your money or jewelry in.
To be able to access this unit, you will be provided a swipe card or a key that is unique to this unit alone. In some facilities, they offer a keypad where you can punch in a combination to open the door. In case you’re worried about dropping your swipe card somewhere accidentally, be sure to report that right away to the operator of the facility. A replacement may cost you, though. Now, if it’s a keypad, be sure to protect the combination so that no one can easily access the unit without your permission. Luckily, many of these long term storage that individuals rent have security cameras that allow operators to keep tab of anyone accessing the unit at any given time. Most facilities will require that the renter supply their own key to the unit itself.
In other self storage facilities, they may use other technologies to block entry of unauthorized individuals with the use of hand scanners and biometric thumbprint. As everyone knows, a finger print is unique to one individual alone. The good thing with this technology is that you won’t need to memorize combinations, nor do you need to make sure you don’t lose swipe cards. However, as you may have learned by now, this would cost you more than other companies that offer less extensive services.
The driving force in the growth of this industry is the people themselves. Many find this facility a necessity, not only for personal reasons but in some cases, for business reasons as well. People change a lot of aspects in their lives and along with this change comes the need to retain some of the material things they have earned, received, or bought over time. There is also the need to make sure that these things are protected against deterioration and the storage units are good options. Storage is much easier to handle that regular cleaning and the possibility of animals causing damage.
If you think these storage units are good only for books, furniture and the like, you’d be delighted to find that they also offer vehicle storage or RV storage and even boat storage. These are good alternatives for vehicles you wouldn’t use for long periods of time, due to changes in seasons or simply because you have to attend to regular work or school. These storage options help protect your properties, not only from potentially being stolen if left at your home, but also from harsh natural elements that may bump it from time to time causing them to lose the paint, crack or corrode. When that does happen, you’d have to deal with fixing it and shelling out extra money. Of course, you would rather use your finances to upgrade the vehicle or put in add-ons to make it bigger and better.
Whatever way you look at it, storage facilities offer owners a way to deal with space problems and potential concerns that may harm their belongings. This industry is bound to stay long and spread towards other countries, too, as soon as they catch on to the trend. The more self storage companies there are and the stiffer the competition is, the better for both operators and customers.
