Types of Self Storage Units
Self storage is one of the growing areas of interest as people look for places to store their possessions during the year, and for alternatives as they move to smaller living spaces. There are several types of self storage available, including long term storage, boat storage, RV storage, mini storage units and climate control storage.
Long Term Storage
For people who find they need a self storage unit for a period longer than just a few months, long term storage is a good option. This type of storage may be found from a moving company or a larger mini storage company. Some storage companies do not allow access to your possessions if they are placed in a container for long term storage. However, if you have chosen a mini storage company and rented a unit, then you can have access to your possessions at any time.
If you are placing your possessions in long term storage, make sure that you protect them from potential mold and mildew by not covering them in plastic, since plastic retains moisture. Also, consider renting a climate control storage unit, particularly if you live in a high humidity area.
Vehicle Storage
Many self storage companies will allow you to store your ATVs, jet skis or other small vehicles in your storage unit. However, make sure that you check with your storage facility manager and your rental agreement before you place your vehicle in your storage unit, since not all facilities will allow this. Also, check to find out if there are limitations on how long you can store your vehicle in your unit, since violating this type of rule may result in violating your rental agreement.
If you are looking for storage of your boat or RV, there are self storage companies that provide services for this kind of specific storage need. Some RV or boat storage facilities will assign a parking space in an open yard that is fenced; others have enclosed warehouses where your boat or RV will be assigned a space. Make sure that you understand the rules for maintaining your RV or boat, since many of these facilities have specific requirements – for example, your vehicle must be registered and you must show proof of insurance.
If you want to store a car, there are facilities that are designated specifically for long term vehicle storage and there are also some self storage companies that will allow you to keep a small vehicle in your storage unit. However, before you put your car in your unit, make sure you know the rules at your particular facility. In some cases, there are limits on how long you can have a vehicle in your unit and you will be required to show proof of registration and insurance. Also, some facilities have regulations about how vehicles can be delivered to self storage units.
Mini Storage
Mini storage units are small self storage units and you can place personal possessions, like home furniture, clothing or other items in this type of unit. Mini storage units are popular as a storage space for self employed individuals who need a space to supplement their home office and keep items like sales samples, records or inventory.
Mini storage facilities can be found in several different types of environments. For example, in large cities like New York, San Francisco and Chicago, self storage units can be found in large, multi-storied warehouse buildings. In suburbs or in similar areas, mini storage can be found in facilities that are spread across many buildings.
Climate Control Storage
In places with severe heat or cold during summer and winter months, climate control storage is a popular type of self storage facility. These facilities are very similar to other types of self storage or mini storage units, except that they are guaranteed to keep the climate between approximately 45 and 85 degrees.
For items like computer components and records, a climate control storage unit helps protect against damage that might result from vast changes to temperature. Also, another advantage to climate control storage is that usually this type of unit has protections against high levels of humidity, which can also damage possessions.
