Storage for Your Vehicle Takes Consideration
An article provided by Simply Self Storage

Often times, people find themselves using one vehicle either for the summer months or only during the winter months. This is most likely going to be true in the northern or Midwestern states, where winters can be extremely harsh; therefore, some vehicles may become seasonal and will need to be stored in a self storage facility.

There are many things that one may need to take into consideration before deciding which vehicle storage company they are going to use. There are also things that one will need to do in order to prepare these vehicles to be stored for a long period of time.

When inspecting the facility that you are considering, you will want to compare the price, security, and the stability of the buildings if you are storing your vehicle at an indoor facility. Storage rental for vehicles can be rather expensive but with the proper research and comparisons you can find one that will allow your car to have a longer life, as compared to sitting in the driveway with a cover over it.

Before taking the vehicle to the facility you will need to make sure that it has been washed and waxed. You should also perform some maintenance tasks in order to ensure proper operation when you take it out of storage. These tasks include but are not limited to:

  • oil and filter change
  • antifreeze tests
  • prevention of condensation inside the fuel tank by making sure the tank is full with a fuel stabilizer

Many people may become concerned about the tires while their vehicle sits in vehicle storage, but as long as the tires have the proper amount of air and are not hit by direct sunlight for a long period of time, they can be fine. Some say that placing the car on jack stands will help promote the life of your tires.

There are numerous tasks that you will want to complete when you get your vehicle to the storage facility and there are some that many people may not even consider. It seems in today's world that no matter how clean any self storage facility is, there is an opportunity for rodents to climb up underneath the hood and cause damage. A great idea is to place crumpled up aluminum foil inside the engine and heater air intakes. This, along with mousetraps in the surrounding area, will eliminate these types of situations.

You will also need to be sure to disconnect the negative battery lead and even though the car will be stored in an indoor facility, you will still need a car cover that is of good quality. Even though you are taking all of these extra precautions to ensure that your vehicle will be maintained properly while in storage, you will want to still make an attempt to get out and drive it every couple of months. When you do, you should change the oil and check the tires for proper inflation each time. Even though a car may held in vehicle storage, the oil will still need to be changed to prevent condensation in the engine.

Obviously, indoor vehicle storage is going to be more expensive than outdoor vehicle storage and you must do your homework in preparation for either one. After all, a vehicle that you are only using a few times a year or a few months a year is most likely going to be one that you have a great deal of money, time, as well as love invested into it.

An outdoor facility is going to offer less protection from the elements, bugs, rodents, theft, and vandalism than an indoor facility will. This is why taking the time to not only call each facility but to actually visit each facility before making a final determination is very important. Many areas of the country may not have indoor facilities that are easily accessible within just a few miles from one’s home.

Quite possibly the most important factor for many people who use any type of vehicle storage is the security level at the facility. Whether it is indoor or outdoor, you will want to make sure the area is fenced in with a gate at the front. Of course the most secure places are self storage locations that offer 24-hour surveillance, which can offer a great deal of peace of mind in terms of protecting one of your biggest investments.
